biography
After 30 years, I'm home again in Louisiana playing my pedal steel guitar. I was born and raised in Reserve, Louisiana. Taught by my Father, I started playing acoustic guitar at age 8. After high school I moved to California to pursue a career in music. This is where I fell in love with the sound of the pedal steel guitar. Although I love all styles of music, my love for Country music and the sound of the BLUES is what inspires me to continue playing my pedal steel with such passion. I play a MSA 12 string, 5 knee lever & 5 pedal guitar. I have been playing for over 30 years. Most of my professional music career has been in California performing with many West Coast bands.

After recently moving back to Louisiana I formed my own band, The Smoke City Band. I've been performing regularly in New Orleans on Bourbon Street at the Krazy Korner club and several other popular night clubs on Bourbon Street. The House of Blues in New Orleans is yet another club where I have enjoyed playing. Some recent events I have performed at include the NFL Staff Party and the Bayou Fest. I also had a wonderful experience performing in Hawaii at Fast Eddie's where I played traditional Hawaiian music on my pedal steel. I also took the opportunity to do a Canadian tour playing pedal steel.

Some additional talents that I posses include playing other instruments such as Bass guitar, Lead guitar, Keyboards, Harmonica, Accordion, Drums, tenor Saxophone, but I still find my first love to be the Pedal Steel!

For relaxation, I enjoy my daily ritual of practicing the many forms of tai chi.

Letters of Encouragement

Good Morning to My NEW FRIEND!!!! Thanks for that, Gary. Special place in my life has just been opened up by you and your talent and wonderful personality. What a man to come into our world and give us all this enjoyment from his heart and soul with his music and friendship. Thanks.

I am going to feature you in our newsletter with photos etc as soon as I can get them all developed. It will be titled "Shades of Robert Randolph-but not in his Shadow". Love your playing so much. Keep up what you are doing as there is a slot in the music world for Gary Miles, as there are slots for Emmons, Randolph, Green, etc. I was tickled to see your version of "Steeling the Blues" and that is neat. Do not change anything you do with your playing. We all play attention to all the great players and sorta wish to be able to play like them, but they are already there in their slots, yours is waiting for you to occupy and you are doing good with what you do now. All of the greats can teach us something, but then do it your way and they will listen to you. Don't mean to "preach" but I am so glad for this contact with you and proud, proud, proud. Hope to see you at our next session in Aug. Stay in touch.

Your new friend and admirer.

Bill Stafford.
